Transform Basic Text Into Custom Designs Without Photoshop

When we first decided to show people how to create professional DTF designs, we wanted to prove something important: you do not need expensive software like Photoshop to make something that looks incredible. Using simple browser-based tools completely changed the way we think about custom t-shirt design. What once felt impossible turned out to be faster and easier than expected.

We did everything using tools that anyone can access from any computer with an internet connection. No expensive subscriptions. No complicated software. Just creativity and smart techniques.

Starting Your Design Project in Kittl

The foundation of our process started with Kittl, a browser-based design tool. We created a new project, switched our units to inches, set the DPI to 300, and used a 15 by 15 inch canvas. This large size gave us plenty of room to experiment while maintaining print quality.

Starting large allowed us to adjust and refine our design freely before scaling it down later for production.

Choosing the Right Font and Creating Your Text

Once the canvas was ready, we selected a font with strong lines and personality. We typed β€œDTF” and positioned it near the center. We duplicated the text layer and placed one below the other to give ourselves flexibility for future effects.

This layered approach made it easy to experiment without losing our original design.

The Block Method: Shaping Your Text Creatively

Instead of using standard text effects, we used the block method. We created small rectangular blocks, rotated them, and placed them around the text to form geometric shapes. This gave us full control over the final look and allowed us to create depth and character.

The process was simple, intuitive, and surprisingly fast, producing results that looked far more professional than basic text styling.

Adding a Vibrant Background That Pops

To make the design stand out, we added a colorful cloud background. We uploaded it into Kittl and aligned it carefully behind the shaped text. The background flowed naturally through the letters, creating a unified and polished look.

The vibrant colors transformed the design from simple text into wearable artwork.

Understanding Vectorization and Clean Backgrounds

Vectorization converts designs into formats printers handle best. We made the black text transparent so the colorful background showed through the letters. This made the text feel like a window into the design rather than an overlay.

The result was cleaner, more intentional, and visually engaging.

Preparing Your Design With Print Ready Flow

After exporting from Kittl, we uploaded the design to Print Ready Flow. We used tools like background removal and Color Knockout to eliminate unwanted white areas while preserving color detail.

Adjusting tolerance settings allowed us to fine-tune the result until it looked just right.

Simplifying Your Order Process: DTF by Size

We used the DTF by Size tool to simplify ordering. Instead of manually building a gang sheet, we uploaded the design, selected the size, and chose the quantity. The system automatically generated a preview.

This made ordering fast, clear, and beginner-friendly.

Pressing Your Design Onto the Shirt

We pressed the transfer onto a white Smart Blanks shirt using a 15 by 15 heat press at 300 degrees. The design was pressed for seven seconds, then pressed again for another seven seconds.

Using the transfer paper for the second press created a glossy finish that made the colors pop.

The Final Result: What We Created

The final shirt looked professional and vibrant. The background flowed cleanly through the text, and any minor white edging blended seamlessly into the shirt. The halftone-style effect gave it a modern streetwear feel.

The result looked like it took hours, even though the process was efficient.

Why This Process Changed Everything

This project proved that professional DTF designs do not require expensive software or years of experience. With browser-based tools and a clear workflow, anyone can create high-quality results.

Each tool played its role, from design creation to printing, making the entire process approachable and fun.

Getting Started With Your Own Designs

To start your own designs, open Kittl, set your canvas to 300 DPI at 15 by 15 inches, choose a font, and experiment with shapes and backgrounds. Test different ideas and do not worry about perfection.

When ready, order transfers using DTF by Size or the Gang Sheet Builder and bring your designs to life with a heat press. Great results come from creativity, experimentation, and the right tools.
